Best regards, Daniel Seifert On behalf of the Humanoid League's Technical Committee ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Call for Participation RoboCup 2013 Humanoid League June 24-30, 2013 (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) http://www.robocup2013.org/ The RoboCup humanoid league is inviting interested teams to apply for participation at the RoboCup 2013 competition in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The humanoid league will host competitions in three classes: kid, teen, and adult sized robots. For more information about the humanoid league, please refer to the humanoid league home page at http://www.tzi.de/humanoid. Due to restrictions on the number of teams able to participate at RoboCup 2013, all teams must provide the qualification material described below. The technical committee will evaluate the qualification material and select the best teams. 1) Team Data ------------ - Team name - URL of the team's home page - Name of team leader or team contact person - E-mail address of team leader or contact person - Postal address of the team, team leader or contact person - Competition class: kid or teen or adult size Please note that teams applying for participation in several classes must submit individual application material for each class and pay the appropriate registration fee for each class. Furthermore, teams in different classes must be able to compete independently and at the same time. 2) Robot Video -------------- The first part of the qualification material is a video of your robot demonstrating your team's autonomous soccer playing skills. The minimum standard for qualification is: - localization of unknown ball position, - walking ability towards the ball, - robot positioning at the ball for kicking, - kicking the ball towards the goal, - ability of getting up autonomously from a fall (Kid Size) However, more complex and intelligent behavior of teams of robots demonstrating localization and team play are preferred, particularly recordings from actual soccer matches. The qualification video must be supplied as a link to it via www.youtube.com. The maximum duration of the video is 5 minutes. The qualifying team is responsible to ensure that the video adheres to YouTube's TOS (especially in regards to music copyright) to prevent the video from being blocked for the reviewers. Videos not viewable by the reviewers may lead to a team not being qualified. No video means no qualification! 3) Team Description Paper ------------------------- A team description paper (TDP) must be submitted which - includes a statement committing to participate in the RoboCup 2013 Humanoid League competition, - includes a statement committing to making a person with sufficient knowledge of the rules available as referee during the competition, - fully describes the scientific aspects of your humanoid robot system and your research interests, - includes a summary of previous relevant achievements in research and development as well as publications, - mentions prior performance in RoboCup competitions - points out enhancements of the robots' hardware or software compared to the previous year - states explicitly whether software from other teams is used and if yes, which parts are used and what the team's own contributions are The TDP is limited to 8 pages maximum and must be submitted in PDF format. Resubmitting of last year's TDP will prevent qualification. The TDP must follow the LNCS format which can be downloaded from http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0 The quality of the TDP and the robot video will be decisive for qualification. Kind regards, Luis F Lupian on behalf of the Humanoid League Technical Committee From lupianl at ieee.org Tue Feb 19 18:40:22 2013 From: lupianl at ieee.org (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Luis_F_Lupi=E1n?=) Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2013 17:40:22 -0600 Subject: [robocup-humanoid] Qualification Results for RoboCup 2013 in Eindhoven Message-ID: Dear Humanoid League Teams, the qualification results for RoboCup 2013 in Eindhoven are now available online at http://www.tzi.de/humanoid/bin/view/Website/Teams2013 This year there were 45 applications (31 for KidSize, 7 for TeenSize and 7 for AdultSize). For each application the qualification material was carefully reviewed by several members of the technical committee and rated according to the criteria announced in the call for participation, cf. http://www.tzi.de/humanoid/bin/view/Website/Call2013. KidSize Qualification --------------------- As in previous years, KidSize applications exceeded the available 24 slots. After review of each submission, 31 teams were considered for qualification and ranked based on the quality of their submission and the qualification criteria. After a vote of the entire Technical Committee, 5 teams were selected for participation in the technical challenges and as runner-ups, and the other 24 teams for full participation in the competition. Runner-up teams are qualified for participation in the technical challenges. Also in case one or several of the 24 fully qualified teams withdraw later on, they will then replace them in the 3-vs-3 soccer competition. TeenSize Qualification ---------------------- The TC members decided to qualify 6 out of 7 applications. AdultSize Qualification ----------------------- The TC members decided to qualify 6 out of 7 applications. Robot inspection ---------------- All teams should be aware that the feasibility of a robot according to the rules will, as always, be inspected onsite during the set-up days of the competition. Please refer to the updated rules at http://www.tzi.de/humanoidfor this year's requirements of your humanoid robots. It must be stressed that rules pertaining to the body-plan of the robot apply equally to robots designed and built by team members as well as commercially available robots. Referee Duties -------------- All teams are reminded that it is their responsibility to provide at least one team member to perform the role of referee during the competition. Although a brief referee training will be held at the competition your referee(s) are expected to have studied the updated rules for 2013 and do some training on their own before coming to Eindhoven. Also, the Call for Participation required every team to include a clear statement of commitment indicating that they would provide a referee. Some teams failed to include this statement. If you are in that case you will be contacted shortly to request such statement and complete the formality. Official letters of qualification --------------------------------- Official letters of qualification will be e-mailed to team leaders shortly. All qualified teams are expected to submit an e-mail confirming their commitment to participate as soon as they have confirmed their funding. A deadline for this will be provided in your letter. Editorial process ----------------- Team description papers (TDPs) of all teams will be included in the proceedings DVD of RoboCup 2013 Symposium if (and only if) it is in LNCS standard and of 8 pages maximum, see http://www.tzi.de/humanoid/bin/view/Website/Call2013, and the comments from the review by the TC members are considered. Teamleaders will be contacted shortly by the TC with details about any necessary changes to your TDP. We are looking forward to meeting you at an exciting RoboCup 2013 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands! The Symposium represents the core meeting for presentation and discussion of scientific contributions to a variety of research areas related to all RoboCup divisions (RoboCupSoccer, RoboCupRescue, RoboCup at Home, RoboCup at Work and RoboCupJunior). Its scope encompasses, but is not restricted to, research and educational activities within the fields of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the symposium offers a unique venue for exploring various and intimate connections of theory and practice across a wide spectrum of research fields. The experimental, interactive, and benchmark character of the RoboCup initiative presents the opportunity to disseminate novel ideas and promising technologies, which are rapidly adopted and field-tested by a large (and still growing) community. SUBMISSION We solicit submissions of papers reporting on high-quality, original research with relevance to the areas mentioned below. All researchers working in these areas, even if not actively participating in RoboCup teams, are urged to submit their work. Both papers describing real-world research and papers reporting theoretical results, as well as combinations thereof, are welcome. We also encourage the submission of high-quality overview articles for any field related to the general scope of RoboCup. The proceedings of the RoboCup International Symposium are published and archived within the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. Submitted papers are limited to 12 pages formatted according to the LNAI requirements (http://www.springer.com/series/1244) and must be electronically submitted through the symposium web site: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=robocupsymposium2013 All contributions are peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers using a blind review process. NEW TRACK To encourage open-source releases of hard- and software components, a special track on open-source developments will be included in the 2013 RoboCup International Symposium. Contributions to this track are limited to eight pages, formatted according to LNAI requirements. They should include evidence of impact of the released component to the RoboCup community. Review of these contributions will be based on technical contribution and benefit for the RoboCup community. We would like to have up to three open-source projects submission from each league. Preface In this second newsletter from the local organization for the RoboCup World Championships 2013 we would like to give you somewhat more information regarding the registration, the updated website, the VISA procedure, shipment of your robots and the possibilities for accommodations during RoboCup 2013. The website for RoboCup 2013 ( www.robocup2013.org) got a major update. The biggest changes to the website are the accessibility and the addition of social media such as Facebook ( www.facebook.com/RoboCup2013) and Twitter (@RoboCup2013 twitter.com/robocup2013) With the new format we hope that you will find the required information easier and faster and that it allows you to stay up to date regarding the news and information of and related to RoboCup 2013. The preparations and organization is proceeding rapidly. We are working hard to make RoboCup 2013 an unforgettable and enjoyable event. Good luck with the preparations for the world championships. We hope that together with you we can make it an event to remember. 2. Registration Also for RoboCup 2013 a web-based system is used, regonline. Only qualified teams can register. Please wait until your league qualifies the teams, so your team will be available in regonline. There is a registration code necessary, which we will send to the team leaders of the qualified teams. Registration proceeds separately for each qualified team and for the team leader and team members. When registering a team, you need to include the information for a ?point of contact? for the team. Please note, though, that the person serving as point of contact is not registered at that time, but only the team is registered. In addition to registering your team, all team leaders and team members need to register as Faculty/Staff or Student participants. a. Payment Credit card payments are immediately validated, therefore we strongly recommend payment by credit card. The other available method of payment takes time. No registration is considered complete until full payment is received. b. Invitation letter The participants from the countries requiring visas will need an invitation letter. The invitation letter will be sent by email to the participants, at our very earliest convenience after the registration is complete. Please wait patiently for the payment to be complete. If you still have questions, please email to visa at robocup2013.org. c. Major Leagues registration Qualified teams are organized by league. No major team can register after May 31, 2013. Team members can only register after their team registration is complete. In the upcoming competition in Eindhoven, the foot size restriction will be the same as it was stated in paragraph 4.3.1 of the Humanoid League Rules for the competition last year in Mexico, namely a rectangular area of a size up to (H*H)/30. In the following, information about the events that lead to this decision will be given, and other options that have been discussed will be named. For the 2013 competitions, an arrangement was made with Robotis about a special offer that allows RoboCup participants to purchase DARwIn-OP robots for a reduced price. This special offer was made public in the call for participation. Unfortunately, the stock DARwIn robot would not be compliant with the 2013 rules after the new foot size restrictions take effect and this detail was not explicitly stated in the call. Neither the Technical Committee, nor the trustees were aware of this. This leads to the unpleasant situation that KidSize teams may have been mislead to believe that they can purchase a team of rule compliant robots from the special offer without the need for modification. The same assumption has implicitly been underlying the arrangements made with Robotis, a valued sponsor of the RoboCup events. After this problematic situation has been brought to the attention of the trustees, it has been decided that a survey among the participants of the Humanoid League should shed light on how many teams are negatively influenced by the foot size reduction. The results of the survey showed that there is indeed a small number of teams that has purchased the robots from the special offer and/or has problems reducing the size of the feet on their own. The trustees carefully considered that many of the teams have already made modifications to their robots to meet the planned change in foot size restriction, and therefore acknowledged that there is no perfect solution that will be fair to everyone. In the end, voiced by the president of the RoboCup federation, the trustees have strongly advised that all things considered, postponing the foot size restriction is the best course of action to take. Furthermore, during the detailed discussions, an issue has been discovered in the way foot size and robot proportion restrictions have been traditionally defined in the rules. While taking the height of the robot into account may have served a valid purpose in the past, at the current state of development it imposes a disadvantage on teams that use robots with a human like mass distribution, because instead of the actual height of the center of mass, the height of the robot becomes the limiting factor that defines the maximum allowed foot size and other robot proportions. In order to be able to use larger feet, teams may be encouraged to artificially increase the height of their robots, for example by wearing weightless paper hats. A detailed explanation of this problem is given in the attached document. The Technical Committee has discussed other options, such as decoupling the robot size restrictions from the height of the robot, or applying a small modification only to the foot size restriction rule as an intermediate solution. Crafting a set of new size restriction rules requires careful consideration of the repercussion on all teams and can only be done for 2014. A temporary, local modification of the foot size restriction rule only for 2013 would essentially be the same as postponing the decrease in maximum allowed foot size. Especially with regard to teams who have already modified their feet, the majority of the Technical Committee expressed the opinion that continuing with the rule progression as planned and helping the teams in need would be their preferred way to resolve this issue, but with respect to the advise of the trustees, the TC has come to terms that freezing the foot size restriction for this year is the least inconvenient solution for all participants. We apologize for any inconvenience that this situation may have caused to the participating teams. About Eindhoven Eindhoven is unmistakably the most adventurous city in the south of The Netherlands. The country?s fifth-largest city offers everything you need to make life enjoyable! A bustling city center with a huge variety of shops, numerous bars, pubs and restaurants, welcoming terraces, a lively nightlife, an overflowing events calendar and art and culture of the highest quality! But Eindhoven also has a rich historical background. Let Eindhoven surprise you? Walking through the streets of Eindhoven you will see a young, modern city. But looks can be deceiving? Eindhoven is in fact one of the oldest cities in The Netherlands and has a very interesting history! It received city rights back in 1232. A lively cigar and textile industry developed along the Dommel river. In the Villa park (city center) you can still see the imposing villas and mansions built by industrialists who settled here. The creation of the light-bulb in 1891 by Philips and the first DAF truck a little later was the beginning of the development and flourishing of the city. Traces of this industrial history can still be found when visiting Eindhoven. Since then Eindhoven has grown to become one of the most prominent cities of Europe in the fields of technology, knowledge and design. Many top-class international high-tech companies are now located in Eindhoven. The Technical University, Fontys High Schools and the Design Academy continue to attract students from all over the world. Modern architecture also found their place in Eindhoven. Some must-sees in Eindhoven: ? Stratumseind This 225 meter long street has the most bars and other nightlife possibilities from Eindhoven. The venue De Effenaar at the Dommelstraat is also worth your visit. ? Philips stadium The Philips stadium is the home base of soccer club PSV. ? Van Abbemuseum The Van Abbemuseum is one of the leading museums for modern and contemporary art. The impressive collection includes works of Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg, Mondriaan and Appel. ? DAF-Museum You can see here the first cars developed by DAF. ? Sint Catharinakerk This church is designed by the famous architect Pierre Cuypers, he also designed the Rijksmuseum and the train station Centraal Station in Amsterdam. ? Evoluon The Evoluon is well known. This ?flying saucer? used to be a museum, but nowadays it is a convention center. ? Shopping in Eindhoven Besides the shopping streets in the inner city of Eindhoven, the indoor shopping centers De Heuvelgalerie and the Piazza Centre offer you the ultimate shopping experience. These two sponsors will also be present at the event. If you want to find out more about job opportunities or technical possibilities, pay them a visit. a. ASML For engineers who think ahead ASML is a successful high-tech company headquartered in the Netherlands, which manufactures complex lithography machines that chip manufacturers use to produce integrated circuits. The steady progress of the world?s technological evolution through smaller, faster, smarter, more energy-efficient yet more affordable chips is to a large extent the result of technological breakthroughs at ASML. In the space of almost thirty years we have grown from nothing into a multinational with 55 locations in 16 countries and annual sales of 5.6 billion Euros in 2011. Behind ASML?s technological breakthroughs are engineers who think ahead. The people who work at ASML include some of the most creative minds in physics, mathematics, chemistry, mechatronics, optics, mechanical engineering, software engineering, and computer science. And, because ASML spends more than half a billion Euros per year on R&D, our people have the freedom and the resources to push the boundaries of known technology. They work in close-knit, multidisciplinary teams and each day they listen to, learn from and exchange ideas with each other. The ideal environment for growth With such a diverse technology culture, generous R&D budget, and a collective determination to create, develop and perfect entirely new technologies ASML represents the ideal environment for professional development and personal growth. If you have an unbridled passion for technology and want to be part of a team that tries out new ideas each day and constantly searches for better, more accurate, and faster ways of doing things, then visit www.asml.com/careers and send us your application. b. MathWorks MathWorks is the leading developer of mathematical computing software. MATLAB, the language of technical computing, is a programming environment for algorithm development, data analysis, visualization, and numeric computation. Simulink is a graphical environment for simulation and Model-Based Design of multi-domain dynamic and embedded systems. Engineers and scientists worldwide rely on these product families to accelerate the pace of discovery, innovation, and development in automotive, aerospace, electronics, financial services, biotech-pharmaceutical, and other industries. MathWorks products are also fundamental teaching and research tools in the world?s universities and learning institutions. Student competitions bridge classroom theory with hands-on learning of industry practices and technologies and are important vehicles for educating the engineers of tomorrow. RoboCup is an excellent example of project-based learning for which MATLAB and Simulink are already used extensively. MathWorks wants to show the student teams, the universities and the visitors the capabilities offered by its software and explore the possibility to apply them wider and more efficiently to the design of new robot technology. MathWorks also sees it as a social responsibility to contribute to society by stimulating our next generation to become interested in technology. The company mission is to accelerate the pace of science and technology. All RoboCup teams get complementary licenses for MATLAB, Simulink and other useful software that they offer and that you can use for preparing: http://www.mathworks.nl/academia/student-competitions/robocup/resources.html 5. July 26th, 2013 University of Bonn, Germany * Abstract: The development of humanoid robots able to play soccer is a fundamental challenge problem for robotics and AI. Since the start of the humanoid league in 2002, there have been lots of improvements in humanoid soccer robots hardware and software. This is partially due to the introduction of standard platforms (Nao, DARwIn-OP, NimbRo-OP) and competitions for complex simulated robots (3D Simulation). The objective of the school is to give students deep insights into the currently leading approaches to bipedal locomotion, dynamic motion generation, environment perception, tactics, and team play. Lectures by leading experts will provide the necessary theoretical background for hands-on exercises with humanoid soccer robots. * The program is based on three pillars: -Theory: Ranging from biomechanics, over compliant actuation, control of balance during walking and dynamic motion, robot state estimation, perception of the game situation, behavior control architectures, motion planning, and multi-agent systems. -Case studies: Successful humanoid soccer systems like the Standard Platform League team B-Human and the Humanoid League team NimbRo TeenSize will be presented. -Practical exercises: A soccer field and real humanoid soccer robots (NimbRo-OP, Darwin-OP, Nao) will be provided for hands-on experience. Participants can also bring their own robots. * Speakers: -Armin Hornung, University of Freiburg -Moritz Maus, TU Darmstadt -Christian Ott, DLR Oberpfaffenhofen -Daniel Polani, University of Hertfordshire -Thomas R?fer, DFKI/University of Bremen -Nikos G. In order to give everybody a bit more time to ponder rule change proposals, we believe it may be beneficial to post proposals for rule changes to this mailing list before RoboCup 2013 starts (i.e. before June 24th). Ideally this comes with arguments why a rule should be changed or added. Do note that you (or somebody else) still has to bring up the proposal during the team leader meetings! The TC will raise the following issues, outlined in appendix A of the rules: 1) the role of H_COM in the robot size restrictions (see email and attachment at http://b.gatech.edu/15bxbAa) and accompanying or other size restriction changes 2) the number of players An increase in kid-size field size is already planned for 2014. The only active external sensor allowed is sound ("human-like" with respect to volume and frequency) with one loudspeaker on the robot. The loudspeaker may be placed in the head, neck or trunk of the robot. Any other active sensor (emitting light, sound, or electromagnetic waves into the environment in order to measure reflections) is not allowed. Although no one seems to be taking advantage of the possibilities offered by this section of the rule book at the moment, the spirit of this particular paragraph is to encourage audible communication between robots. Human soccer players are allowed to talk to each other, so robots should also be allowed to hold "human-like" communication amongst them. I have to agree that section 4.5.2 seems to contradict this, so we should make amendments to make it explicit that "human-like" communication between robots is in fact allowed under the terms specified by section 4.4.1. Also, this particular section does not mention anything about audible communication between robot and human members of the team. I believe we should take the opportunity to discuss in the TC whether we should allow or disallow audible communication between humans and robots. ROS (Robot Operating System) is a popular middleware for developing robot application software that is used by many research groups. Our release provides functionality for hardware abstraction, visual perception, and behavior generation. We used the framework to implement basic soccer skills, like omnidirectional walking, kicking, and getting up which have been demonstrated by the NimbRo-OP in the Humanoid TeenSize competition at RoboCup 2013. The software is available here: https://github.com/NimbRo/nimbro-op-ros The framework is documented in the following paper: Philipp Allgeuer, Max Schwarz, Julio Pastrana, Sebastian Schueller, Marcell Missura and Sven Behnke: "A ROS-based Software Framework for the NimbRo-OP Humanoid Open Platform" In Proceedings of 8th Workshop on Humanoid Soccer Robots, IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots, Atlanta, October 2013. http://www.ais.uni-bonn.de/papers/HSR13_Allgeuer_ROS_NimbRo-OP.pdf Further information on the NimbRo-OP robot is available here: http://www.nimbro.net/OP Due to the generic nature of our software, it should be easy to apply the software framework to similar humanoid soccer robots such as the DARwIn-OP. Message-ID: <82C808E6-E3D9-4477-9422-E04C469ECB6D@gmu.edu> We were not able to attend RoboCup2013 an so did not attend the team meeting. But there is precious little information online. My reading of the last posting to the humanoid mailing list about this suggests that the technical committee was asked to postpone the foot size change through 2013, but it does not indicate whether it will be done for 2014, given the fact that it's presently attached to height rather than center of gravity. Furthermore, the 2013 draft rules (there do not appear to be any 2014 draft rules at this point) curiously state that changes in foot size and attachment to center of gravity versus height are simply "anticipated" whereas other changes (like the field layout) "will" happen. Does anyone know if an official decision has been made and what it is, or if not, when one will be made? A problem is that we have been asked by the trustees to make drastic changes, which we are still discussing. As for the foot size, there seems to be a consensus that the foot size dimension will be only related to the height of the centre of mass, rather than the height of the robot. The other dimensions will be related to the height of the robot. Will the dimensions listed under section 1 of the 2013 rules for TeenSize and AdultSize (which use the 6x9m field already) apply to this year's KidSize field? I ask because the ratio of marked areas to the field size differs slightly between the two fields at present. As for a follow-up, does this imply that there may be a future increase in the size of the KidSize teams? We participated in the 5v5 exhibition in Mexico City and I recall thinking that our two robots (leaving the goalie aside in the box) would be insufficient to cover the ground necessitated by playing on that size of field. The final layout of the new kidsize field is not yet available, but should be announced in the next few weeks. It probably will not be the same as Teen/Adultsize, but rather be more similar (or maybe equal) to the SPL field. > As for a follow-up, does this imply that there may be a future increase in the size of the KidSize teams? In Eindhoven the teamleaders voted: 4vs4 games: 9 votes 5vs5 games: 6 votes abstained: 2 votes So we will have 4vs4 kidsize games in 2014.
